I started purees at 4 months. Can I start BLW ?

This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions when people discover BLW a little later:

“I started purees at 4 months… did I miss something?”

“Is it too late?”

“Can I still submit some pieces?”

And if we were to reassure you right away:

👉 No, you didn't miss anything 💛

If you've already started a "traditional" weaning process between 4 and 6 months, it's perfectly possible to then transition to BLW-Led Weaning). There's no single way to do it, nor is there a perfect path. Every family, every baby, and every beginning of their food journey is different.

Mixed diversification: what is it?

When you start with purees and then introduce pieces adapted to the baby, it is called mixed weaning.

In practice, baby first discovers purees and then gradually evolves towards greater food autonomy once he/she has the necessary prerequisites.

If you're wondering what those famous prerequisites are, also check out our article When to start BLW ?

This transition is very common and many more families than you might imagine go through it.

Switching from purees to chunks may require an adjustment period

Although this transition is entirely possible, some babies may need a little more time.

Until now, the baby was spoon-fed. The meals came directly into his mouth, at a steady pace, without much effort required.

With BLW , everything changes.

This time, baby has to learn to grab food on their own, understand how to hold it, bring it to their mouth, manage its texture and discover chewing.

And without even realizing it…

👉 This requires a huge amount of effort.

Some babies immediately love this newfound freedom. Others may experience some frustration at first.

That's normal.

Starting out like a baby starting out in BLW

A common mistake is wanting to go too fast because the baby is older.

However, even if the baby is already 7, 8 or 9 months old, it is advisable to start the pieces like a baby who is starting
on BLW day 1.

Age isn't everything.

What matters most:

  • his experience with the pieces
  • its grasp
  • its ability to bring to the mouth
  • its texture management

So start with large, easy-to-grasp formats and observe the baby.

Many parents also wonder how to adapt the sizes or shapes offered. If that's your question, also check out " What size or shape should I offer my baby food in?"

Starting purees at 4 months and wanting to start BLW at 6 months is perfectly possible. Or perhaps you're wondering how to combine breast milk/infant formula and BLW .

Observing your baby becomes your best tool

During this transition, observation plays a crucial role.

Observe how the baby grasps food, how they bring it to their mouth, how they manage chewing, or which textures seem easier.

This will allow for gradual adjustments to the size, texture, cooking methods, and shapes offered.

And above all…

No pressure.

Baby is learning.

Every baby develops at their own pace, and some milestones may happen faster or slower. You can also check out Baby Development to better understand these changes.

The baby's position remains essential

When the baby was eating purees, he or she could sometimes be placed in less suitable positions.

But when pieces are introduced, safety becomes even more important.

For safe eating, the baby must be seated with a stable pelvis, a relatively straight back and ideally with their feet supported.

A good posture greatly reduces the risks during meals.

✨ Practical guide: how to facilitate the transition?

A few simple tips can help baby transition more smoothly from purees to pieces of food:

✔️ Start when baby is rested
✔️ Offer large, easy-to-grasp pieces
✔️ Avoid pressure
✔️ Eat with baby
✔️ Accept that they will explore a lot at first
✔️ Let time do its work

Initially, the baby will sometimes eat very little.

And that's normal 💛

What if the baby seems frustrated?

Some babies want to go fast.

Very soon 😄

They may want to eat more but not yet be able to carry food as easily as they would like.

During this period, many families choose a gentle transition: continuing some more traditional meals while gradually letting the baby discover pieces of food.

The goal is not to achieve perfect success overnight.

But to move forward calmly.

In summary

Starting purees at 4 months does not close the door on BLW at all.

A mixed diversification is entirely possible and many families choose this path.

The key is to observe the baby, respect their rhythm and let them gradually discover this new way of eating.

Because in food too…

👉 there is no single right way to do it.

Of course, these guidelines apply to a healthy baby who is following their growth curve correctly.
