What is fine motor skills?

Fine motor skills is to be able to coordinate the small muscles present in the wrist, the hand and the fingers in order to make very precise movements. Fine motor skills develops differently from one child to another, because everyone advances and evolves at their own pace.

At the beginning, Bébé will start with the control of its overall motor skills (the center of its body) and then focus on its fine motor skills (the outer parts).

The evolution of fine motor skills

The development of fine motor skills goes through several stages.

Baby will first go through a so -called reflex motor skills. It does not control its motor skills at all and grabs your finger for example by pure reflex. Then comes the motor skills, baby has more and more voluntary grip capacity. He will take an object because he wishes, he begins to control the movements of his hand. Around his 3 months, he will catch an object with one hand to know how to pass it from one hand to the other towards his 5 months and grab it with two hands at about 6 months.

The grip of the object with the hand and the fingers will also evolve. He can start taking an object with his fingers stretched, then they will fall back to the palm to catch something. Finally, it will finish the development of its fine motor skills by grasping an object with the thumb which stands out from the other fingers.

The famous thumb-index pliers will be developed around 9 months of baby.

Why is fine motor skills?

The development of fine motor skills is very important. Fine motor skills brings autonomy to the child in the different everyday gestures such as bringing a spoon to his mouth to eat or even know how to dress on his own. It also develops baby's capacities and self -confidence.
