Should I offer water to the baby during his meal?
When a baby begins baby-led weaning, they primarily get their hydration formula or breast milk and will likely never have actually drunk water before.
However, it is important to offer babies small amounts of water as soon as they start eating solid foods, for several reasons:
- Aids intestinal transit
- Good oral hygiene
- Allows baby to become familiar with the glass/straw, ….
When should I offer water to the baby?
Offer your baby a little water several times during meals . This will allow them to take short breaks and rinse their mouth. If your baby has several different things to taste, rinse their mouth between each food so they can appreciate the true nature of each one.
Don't forget to offer your baby a sip of water at the end of their meal . This will help rinse their mouth and ensure it's completely empty.

What can you give a baby to drink?
Soda, tea, coffee, fruit juice… these are all beverages that are obviously not recommended for babies and even young children. These types of drinks have no nutritional value and provide an entirely unnecessary source of sugar!
Milk should remain the primary beverage before the baby turns 1 year old , as it is the most nourishing liquid and the most suited to their needs.
Water in small amounts from 6 months onwards, during meals. Also when baby needs to hydrate more : high temperatures, loose stools, fever, etc.
What type of container should I offer the baby?
Initially, we advise you to either use a bottle that your baby is used to, or to help them by holding the container : cup, glass, or mug.
Gradually, the baby's grasping and motor skills will expand, and he will be able to bring the container to his mouth himself.
Always leave a cup/bottle within the baby's reach, so that he/she can help himself/herself as he/she wishes and continue to develop his/her autonomy at his/her own pace.
